Here are some of my favorite guitar luthiers and manufacturers. I am inspired by these talented builders who put their heart and soul into each instrument. I’ve also listed some of my favorite mainstream builders as well.

Boutique Guitar Reps


Indoor Storm - Eddie Berman at Indoor Storm is a wealth of knowledge on many boutique builders. Indoor Storm carries a select group of boutique guitars. Give Eddie a call to tell you more about it.

Destroy All Guitars - This is Cliff Cultreri’s website. He represents some of the finest boutique guitar, amplifier and pedal manufactures today. Check out his site for some extraordinary instruments.

Boutique Guitar Exchange - A very nice website with great equipment and beautiful pictures.

Traveling Guitars


Chiquita - One of the original traveling guitar companies; Erlewine Guitars. Very nice and easy to play. Check out the Lazer guitar and some of their other guitars too!

Speedster - Here is a compact electric travel guitar made by The Traveler Guitar Company. It plays surprisingly well. They also make an acoustic model call The Escape. Very cool really.

Guitar Strings, Cables & Other Guitar Parts


Tone Pros - Tone Pros offers a unique locking “stop-tail” bridge system. It works very well and is used by some of the finest boutique builders in the world.

Just Strings - Here is a thorough line of strings that are available on line.

D’Addario Strings - Nice strings. Sound good with long life. I prefer the EXP brand.

DR Strings - My new standard string replacement. A high-quality string that last long and are affordable.

GHS Strings - I used these strings for 25 years. They sound great but don’t last long.

Everly Strings - These are the best strings I’ve ever played. The sound great for a long long time. But, they are very very expense. They are worth it though.

Mojo Guitar Parts - A nice variety of all things guitar.

ACME Guitar Works - They specialize in selling boutique guitar electronics including Suhr, Lollar, Fralin and Van Zandt. They also represent Duncan and Fender.

Klotz Cable - Klotz is huge German cable company that really understands signal loss for guitars. They have design a line of guitar cable which claims to have the lowest cable loss available. It is highly endorsed by Gerald Weber at Kendrick Amplifiers.

Lava Cable - Lava Cable was started by Mark Stoddard, a career military man from Santa Barbara, CA. He is educated in electronics but is also a fellow guitar player (and Fuchs Amp man too!). These are some of the finest cables you can buy. Mark’s understanding of cable noise and guitar noise have led to his perfect manufacturing techniques. They are extremely low noise cables. You won’t be disappointed with this product!

Klotz Cable - Klotz LaGrange Guitar cable is supposed to be the best guitar cable on the planet....according to Mr. Weber. It has an extra conductive plastic shielding in between the regular shielding and the inside conductor which claims to cut the capacitance to less than half. I haven’t tried this cable myself but I have read plenty of testimonials. It all sounds good to me. Try it for yourself!.

Tronical Power Tuning System - Check this thing out! Very cool! Stay in tune all the time!

Doc Hum Free - Very innovative Noise Canceling System for Strats.

Evidence Audio Cables - These guys claim to have the best cables...as they all do...Judge for yourself.



Boutique Guitar Builders


Briggs Guitars - Jack Briggs is a very talented luthier from North Carolina. Check out My Guitars page and my Gear Reviews page for more information on my Jack Briggs Guitar. You can also see a wonderful review of Briggs Guitars on Jason Barker’s website Steelbender.com.

Baker Guitars - Rumor has it....he’s back in the biz making hand-made guitars again. I’ve never played a “real Baker”, but if it’s good enough for Robben Ford and Scott Lerner, it’s good enough for me. Gene Baker has a very interesting history. He is very talented luthier. Check out his current website www.meangene.org or www.finetunedinstruments.com. I anticipate some great work from Gene in 2007!

Sakashta Guitars - These look to be fantastic guitars. I can’t wait to try one.

McInturff Guitar - I really like these guitars. I played one at Indoor Storm. Very nice!

Carruthers Guitars - I had a custom guitar made by John many years ago. He really does beautiful work!

John Suhr Guitars - Simply some of the best guitars being made today. Check out his site with all the pickups and electronics. I put V60s in my Strat and it was a vast improvement!

Nathan Sheppard - This guy seems to be making a name for himself. I like what he is producing.

Nik Huber Guitars - Huber has achieved a reputation on par with the likes of Tom Anderson, Don Grosh and John Suhr in Germany. You MUST check out the beautiful hand-made guitars!

Campbell American Guitars - These guys pride themselves on making the All-American Guitar. Its a really nice line of guitars.

David Thomas McNaught Guitars - These seem to be very nice guitars using on the finest materials. Check out their new website.

DeTemple Guitars- Michael DeTemple is a very talented luthier. He puts his heart and sole into these instruments and the craftsmanship is world-class. Check out his site to see his new pictorial section on his building process. I love his 50s era “Spirit Series” guitars!

Lollar Guitars - Jason Lollar is a professional luthier and also designs and builds a full line of guitar pickups.

Gadow Guitars - Ryan Gadow is obsessed with quality. These guitars all very well made.

Grosh Custom Guitars - Amazing guitars here made by Don Grosh, Hot players like Randy Jacobs and Michael Landau have been long time users of Grosh Guitars. Check out his site!

Mosrite - A very strange and disturbing history about these guitars. I do think they are cool though.

Sadowsky - These are beautiful archto guitars. Check out the new Jimmy Bruno model!

Italia Guitars - Want see some guitars with some real “Italian” style? Check them out!

Lipe Guitars - Yet another very cool guitar manufacture with some beautiful work. Mike Lipe is truly talented! Just take a look at his credit list and you will see he is highly respected by the BEST.

Moser Guitars - Neal Moser makes some of the most unique guitars I have ever seen. Check out his work here. Neal was the original designer for BC Rich.

Grimes Guitars - I just think Steve Grimes does some beautiful work. Look at his site and see for yourself.

Liquid Pixel Shop - Another fine studio that paints custom guitars. One of kind finishes!

Mainstream Guitar Builders


Music Man Guitars - I own a LUKE. All of their signature guitars are incredibly well made. They are easy to play and they sound awesome.

Tom Anderson Guitars - I’m a really big fan. These guitars just feel good and sound great. I love their little mini humbuckers too!

Taylor Guitars - I think these guys are making some very innovative guitars these days. They are really thinking out of the box.

Parker Guitars - Again, another company who I think is stretching their imagination and producing some new and unique guitars. Check them out. I love the FLY!

Burns London Guitars - A UK-based manufacturer. Very different guitars with some fresh new ideas. I hope they sound as good as they look. Check out the Jet Sonic...my favorite in their line!

Jerry Jones Guitars - Very cool and stylistic guitars.

Reverend Guitars - Very unique designs and sounds.

Zemaitis Guitars - Again, very unique guitars here. Beautiful metal work plating on all these guitars.

Phantom Guitar Works - I love this “out of the box” guitar style. Very cool.

Carvin - I love this company. Privately owned and operated. They offer some of the finest guitars and amps in the industry.

Hamer - The Hamer Guitar Company has always catered to guitarists who want a custom setup. Now they offer a full line of very well built and designed guitars. Jol Dantzig has built a great company here. My favorite is the Monaco Quilt-Work guitar.

First Act - I love the style of these guitars too. They are different looking and sounding.

Wilson Bros. Guitars - Finally, someone who is making a quality version of the Mosrite Ventures model. Very very cool.

Fender Musical Instruments - Of course.

Gibson Guitars - Well create website...if you are into this kind of thing.

Guild Guitars - Very fine made guitars!

Dean Guitars - Every time I see these guitars hanging on the wall in a store I take a second look. They always catch my attention. They are geared toward the heavy rock player and seem to be well designed and built.

Michael Kelly - The Michael Guitar Company now makes a full line of acoustic guitars and bases, electrical guitars and bases as well as mandolins. The craftsmanship is at the top end.

Babicz - Jeff Babics really thinks out of the box when designing these guitars. Visit his site to see all his wonderful work.

Line 6 - You’ve got to hand it to these guys. They started a whole new trend in amplifiers with their modeling software.

Fender - Obviously, Classics!

RKS Guitars - Finally, a guitar company who is really thinking out of the box. These are some of the most inventive guitars I have seen in years. A whole new twist in my opinion. Check them out. My personal favorite is the Hollowbody. I played this guitar at NAMM last year and I was very very impressed!

Rickenbacker Guitars - This site is really well done. Classic guitars too!

Guitar Pickups


Lollar - Jason Lollar is a professional luthier and also designs and builds a full line of guitar pickups. Jason is a noted authority on everything related to electronic pickups. My personal favorite pickup is his Mini Humbucker which I included in my new Jack Briggs guitar.

Kinman - Chris Kinman is a fantastic pickup designer. The tone and “roundness” of these pickups are just marvelous! Many pro players prefer Kinman pickups in the Strats as a replacement to the Fender single coil.

Lace - They offer a full line of guitar and bass pickups as well as a new line of guitars and accessories. Players include Walter Becker (Steely Dan) and Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney).

Lindy Fralin - They too offer a full line of replacement pickups as well as a few unique designs. In my opinion, Lindy Fralin Strat pick ups the be best “bell” sounding single coil sound I have ever heard.

Rio Grande - Here are a “Texas-Style” guitar pickup manufacturer. These pickups are custom wound and “seasoned to taste” per your order.

Kent Armstrong - Trained by Bill Lawrence, Kent has been designing and winding pickups for many years. Kent is also the designer of the Burns “Trisonic” pickups in England. Check out the Burns Guitars here.

Joe Barden - These pickups are endorsed by Danny Gatton. Joe Barden introduced the “twin blade” single coil pickup in 1983. Since then, he has developed a pretty unique line of pickups. He now offers bridges and saddles for Telecasters.

Suhr - John Suhr designs and builds some of the best sounding replacement pickups. I personally have the V60s in my American Strat.

Tom Anderson - The Tom Anderson guitars are fitted with custom Tom Anderson pickups. They sound great. My favorite is his mini humbucker.

EMG - EMG has been my primary pickup in all my guitars for almost 25 years now. For the “Active Pickup” thing, there is nobody better. I personally love the 85 and the 89. The LUKE SLA is also a favorite of mine.

Seymour Duncan - Seymour Duncan has been making pickups for a very long time. In a way, they are now classics.

Dimarzio - One of the best companies for rock and roll pickups in my opinion.

L.R. Baggs - Very high quality acoustic pick up systems and acoustic guitar amplifiers.
